PE Days - Tuesday and Thursday

Welcome to Year 5 – We have a very exciting year ahead of us.

We are looking forward to getting started on some exciting new learning! This year our history topics are Ancient Egypt and The Mayans. We will be looking at life cycles, materials and space in Science as well as building shelters, making scones and making a moving toy for Design and Technology. In Geography, we will be learning about climates and biomes, fieldwork and OS map skills.

PE - Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child has a full Welland Academy PE kit and that they arrive for school already dressed for PE. Also, please make sure that long hair can be tied back at all times and if your child has earrings, please make sure that they are removed before the lesson.

Spellings – The children will learn spelling rules in class three times a week. They will also revisit spelling rules from previous year groups. Each week, they will have 5 spelling words to learn.

English – Over the year, we will be writing a variety of unique pieces. These will include: narratives, poetry, non-chronological reports, persuasive letters and setting descriptions.

Maths – Over the year, we will be becoming mathematicians and learning place value, the four operations, fractions, statistics and time.

Guided reading – Our guided reading lessons are based around a variety of high-quality texts, focusing on the reading domains.

Reading – Reading is an area of focus within our school this year and is being promoted in several ways. If your child reads a certain number of books, then they will get to move along their accelerated reader target and will be able to collect a small prize.

Homework – Every Wednesday, children will be sent home with timestables and 5 spellings to learn. They will be tested on the spellings on a Wednesday and their score will be recorded in their reading records. Children are also encouraged to read every day. Please ensure their reading record is signed if they have read with you at home. They also have access to Times Table Rockstars, which they can complete for additional practice.

Uniform – All children will need to dress according to the school uniform policy: school shoes, correct Welland uniform, long hair tied back, no makeup, one pair of stud earrings, which must be removed for P.E and swimming. Also, Year 5 children must wear a tie with their uniform.

If you have any questions about your child’s class routines or learning, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you!
