Welcome to the Year 6 Romania Class page!

Class teacher: Miss Lilley

Current topic: Animal adaptations

P.E days: Monday and Wednesday

Class reading book: Goodnight Mr Tom

I hope everyone had a restful summer and are looking forward to the exciting learning opportunities we have planned in year 6 this year. As year 6 is an extremely busy year, we will be holding a 'welcome to year 6' talk at the beginning of the year to provide you will all the information you'll need.

Continuing with our normal operating procedures, the students will handwash and sanitise their hands regularly throughout the day and the classroom and toilets will be regularly cleaned.

To start the year, we will be studying the topic 'animal adaptations'. This topic is primarily science and geography based. We will initially learn about how to classify different plants and animals based on their key characteristics.  We will learn about the findings of Charles Darwin and the theory he proposed on evolution following his trip to the Galápagos Islands. Following this, we will explore the adaptations of some of the fascinating animals that currently reside in the Galápagos Islands. Once we have a good idea of how different animals have adapted to life on the Galápagos, we will then explore how different plants and animals around the world have special characteristics which enable them to adapt to their environment. To end the unit, we will investigate whether we believe animals are still adapting on the planet. In geography, we will learn about the main geographical regions on our planet and how these can be located using longitude and latitude lines.

In writing this half-term, we will complete a piece of performance poetry, a narrative piece based on the book Varmints and a non-chronological report. We will begin our maths learning with number and place value.

Our class reading book is Goodnight Mr Tom. This is read to them every day. We encourage the students to read every day at home, making sure they bring in their reading record each day to be checked. We have a whole class reward system for reading, whereby if they reach certain reading milestones they will receive a small prize.  Homework will be sent out on a Friday and will need to be completed ready for the following Friday please. They will also need to make sure they are finding time to complete TT Rockstars at home.  Please be aware, there will be no Doodle this year. All logins are in their reading record books.

If you have any questions or queries about your child's learning, do not hesitate to come and see me at the classroom door at the end of the school day. Alternatively, you can make an appointment with me after school. Thank you for your support.
